Frozen Cinnamon Roll Brand Expands to Target Nationwide Sunshine Buns, a Utah-based frozen cinnamon roll maker, has launched in Target stores nationwide and closed a $7 million Series A funding round, marking a significant expansion milestone for the brand. The Target rollout follows the brand's entry into Southern California Costco warehouses and regional grocers including Hy-Vee, United Supermarkets, Harmons, New Seasons Market, Gelson's, and Bristol Farms. The company said additional national retail expansion is planned for later this fall. Sunshine Buns produces fully baked, individually wrapped cinnamon rolls that heat from frozen to ready-to-eat in 45 seconds in a microwave. The product line includes three core flavors: Original with Cream Cheese Frosting, Cookies & Cream, and Strawberries & Cream. Each bun contains 8 grams of protein.
From Home Kitchen to National Retail The brand was founded by Chrisi and Matt Hammer and Kass and Brian Martin, building on a 40-year-old family cinnamon roll recipe. What began as home-baked orders in Utah in 2022 expanded into a storefront before growing beyond the state. Earlier this year, Sunshine Buns refreshed its packaging with a brighter, more playful design that emphasizes the family recipe and product attributes like the real cream cheese frosting.
Series A Fuels Growth Plans The $7 million Series A will support increased production and inventory capacity, marketing efforts, new product development, and team expansion as retail partnerships grow. "There's a lot of joy wrapped up in a homemade cinnamon roll, and seeing my mom's recipe go from our kitchen to freezer aisles across the country is incredible," said Chrisi Hammer, Co-Founder of Sunshine Buns. "As we grow, we want more people to be able to bring that joy into everyday moments, whether they're enjoying Sunshine Buns with their kids, sharing them with a friend or simply treating themselves, all while staying true to the recipe and quality that got us here." Kass Martin, co-founder, added: "Launching nationwide at Target is such an exciting milestone for us because it means more people can discover Sunshine Buns and enjoy a little bit of happiness in their everyday routines. We have big plans for our buns, and our goal is to build Sunshine Buns into something special people can find wherever they shop."
Why It Matters
The Target expansion positions Sunshine Buns in one of the country's largest retailers by store count, significantly broadening consumer access to the premium frozen bakery category. The funding validates the brand's product-market fit and suggests investor confidence in the frozen convenience-food segment's growth trajectory.
